Incorporating OER into teaching also provides students with access to learning materials from the first day of class, in addition to many other student and instructor benefits, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>cost-efficiency:<\/strong> OER provide students with free learning materials (or low cost if printed);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>customizable:<\/strong> instructors can adapt OER and modify them for their courses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>contributing to student success: <\/strong>OER can be accessed by students from the first day of classes, improving their access to course learning materials; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs):<\/strong> adapting or creating OER helps support UN SDG 4: Quality Education and UN SDG 10: Reduced Inequality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/10\/stephanie-quail-headshot.jpeg\" alt=\"Stephanie Quail\" class=\"wp-image-344253\" style=\"width:250px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/10\/stephanie-quail-headshot.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/10\/stephanie-quail-headshot-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Stephanie Quail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>快播视频's open education course was initially developed in 2020 for Academic Innovation Fund (AIF) project leads by <strong>Sarah Coysh<\/strong>, associate dean of the 快播视频 Libraries\u2019 Digital Engagement &amp; Strategy Division, and <strong>Stephanie Quail,<\/strong> director of the Libraries\u2019 Open Scholarship Department. The course supported AIF leads in turning a component of their AIF into an OER. Starting in 2022, the course was opened up to all interested faculty and staff at 快播视频. Quail will be teaching this year\u2019s iteration of the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re interested in using OER in your teaching, I highly recommend taking this course,\" says Quail. \"It will provide you with training, practical guidance and resources to help you get started in incorporating open educational practices into your courses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fully online and asynchronous course will run for four weeks, beginning on <strong>Monday, Nov. 11<\/strong> and wrapping up on <strong>Monday, Dec. 9<\/strong>. The course also includes two optional Zoom check-in sessions with the instructor. The following topics are covered in the course:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Module 1 \u2013 OER 101: What is OER? <\/strong>Including examples of OER and how they benefit students and faculty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 2 \u2013 Copyright and Creative Commons licenses: <\/strong>An exploration of the range of open licenses available to creators and how to choose a license for an OER project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 3 \u2013 Finding and evaluating OER: <\/strong>How to find OER for your subject area and evaluate them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 4 \u2013 Creating or adapting pre-existing OER: <\/strong>Learn about OER project management techniques, accessibility considerations, and OER tools and platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEngaging with this course in 2023 was such a lovely mix of the practical and philosophical,\" says <strong>Lisa Endersby<\/strong>, an educational developer at York's Teaching Commons. \"Open education can be challenging to wrap your head around, so I appreciated the clear, concise content delivery to help us explore the best way to ensure what we were creating was open and accessible. I also really enjoyed our in-course conversations, particularly as a way to explore the what, why and how of creating an OER component.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those looking to expand their knowledge of
