  {"id":394377,"date":"2025-04-16T15:02:08","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T19:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=394377"},"modified":"2025-04-16T18:13:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T22:13:14","slug":"its-in-the-air-art-science-and-engineering-merge-to-light-up-airborne-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/04\/16\/its-in-the-air-art-science-and-engineering-merge-to-light-up-airborne-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s in the air: art, science and engineering merge to light up airborne pollution\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">快播视频 researchers are working to make invisible air pollution visible through an innovative project that merges art, science and engineering.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing on the threats of airborne black carbon \u2013 a pollutant resulting from vehicle exhaust and wildfire smoke \u2013 the team will create wearable technology that detects these harmful emissions in real time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Close-up-MyAirWear-prototype-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"MyAirWear prototype\" class=\"wp-image-394473\" style=\"width:520px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Close-up-MyAirWear-prototype-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Close-up-MyAirWear-prototype-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Close-up-MyAirWear-prototype-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Close-up-MyAirWear-prototype-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Close-up-MyAirWear-prototype-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">My Air Wear prototype, depicting how the black carbon particulate will be visible when wearing the vest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>With the World Health Organization reporting an estimated 4.2 million premature deaths each year caused by ambient air pollution, the \u201cSensingChange: Black carbon air pollution detection and critical artworks\u201d project aims to develop a novel measurement tool and increase public awareness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe main idea is to try to tackle the global threat of climate change,\u201d explains <strong>Grace Grothaus<\/strong>, a York PhD student and computational media artist. \u201cA lot of attention goes to carbon dioxide and methane emissions, but black carbon emissions are a major contributor to climate change and a main driver of immediate health threats.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interdisciplinary project sees collaboration between scholars and students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lassonde School of Engineering<\/a> \u2013 including graduate student <strong>Abolfazl Kohenstani <\/strong>and undergraduate <strong>Basak Babadagi <\/strong>\u2013 and other researchers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ampd.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of the Arts, Media, Performance &amp; Design<\/a> \u2013 such as principal investigator Professor <strong>Mark-David Hosale<\/strong>. The group's aim is to develop a sensor to isolate and measure black carbon particulates. This sensor will be integrated into electronics that Grothaus will create for smart garments called \"My Air Wear,\" designed in collaboration with an industrial design lab out of the Ontario College of Art &amp; Design (OCAD). When worn, My Air Wear will light up in response to black carbon emissions, giving a visual indication of how much of the pollutant is in the air.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are engineers, atmospheric scientists, artists and designers,\u201d says Grothaus, who is also leading the project\u2019s public art, awareness and outreach initiatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gerd Grau<\/strong> is an associate professor of electrical engineering at York. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eecs.yorku.ca\/~grau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lab<\/a>, through Lassonde, uses novel materials and additive manufacturing techniques to develop devices such as transistors, sensors and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To design this low-cost, low-waste sensor, his team employed a laser process to convert a polymer into a form of graphene \u2013 an electrically conductive material.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Basak-and-Abolfazl-in-the-lab-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"York grad student and research assistant Abolfazl Anvari with undergraduate student and research assistant Basak Babadagi working on the project\" class=\"wp-image-394472\" style=\"width:412px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Basak-and-Abolfazl-in-the-lab-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Basak-and-Abolfazl-in-the-lab-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Basak-and-Abolfazl-in-the-lab-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Basak-and-Abolfazl-in-the-lab-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/04\/Basak-and-Abolfazl-in-the-lab-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">York grad student and research assistant Abolfazl Anvari with undergraduate student and research assistant Basak Babadagi working on the project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve created a prototype and we are currently characterizing it in terms of its sensitivity to black carbon,\u201d he says, adding much of the time in this development stage has been spent calibrating the sensor\u2019s measurement capabilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers aim to make the sensors sensitive enough to show real-time responses as vehicles pass by, making the invisible pollution immediately apparent to wearers and observers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current particulate sensors don't isolate this specific type of pollution, earning the project a $248,428 Exploration Grant from the Government of Canada's New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), which funds high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the sensors and vests are ready to deploy, the team will call on the public to collect information about black carbon levels in their neighbourhoods. The team plans to engage 10 to 50 citizen scientists in the initial phase, who will collect real-time, location-specific pollution data while wearing the vests and upload findings to the online database.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also has a significant artistic component. The team plans to create more elaborate wearable artworks, \u201cAtmoSpheres,\u201d which use motifs such as illuminated lungs to show emissions from passing cars to showcase at parades and exhibitions. There are also plans to seek out collaborations with art galleries. These public initiatives aim to raise awareness about black carbon emissions and their impact on health and the environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall, the team will launch community workshops to share prototypes, get feedback and iterate in design cycles. The larger community initiatives will launch later, possibly next spring.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to create a kit that will enable small groups of people to participate,\u201d says Grothaus. \u201cIf it works here in Toronto, then we can try in other places too.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is already expanding its scope through an OCAD partnership with Ranee Lee\u2019s lab, DESIGNwith. The collaboration within York, however, has been incredibly rewarding, says Grothaus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe unexpected rewards have been the absolute joy of learning alongside engineers and scientists, and that enthusiasm has really been a main driver for me,\u201d she notes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That, along with the possibility of advancing technology and awareness around the invisible threats of climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"I'm very worried about that ... and I\u2019m trying to figure out how I can address that through art,\" she says. By bringing together different research approaches to raise awareness on the dangers of carbon-based toxins, she hopes to debunk the \u201cpervasive belief that the air is clean
