At 快播视频, it\u2019s at the centre of a new study exploring how immersive technology is reshaping the way students and faculty write, collaborate and learn.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The research, led by <strong>Rich Shivener<\/strong>, a professor in the Writing Department, and his research colleague Professor <strong>Elizabeth Caravella<\/strong>, a scholar of digital rhetoric, was recently published in the peer-reviewed journal <em>Written Communication.<\/em> Over the course of a year, Shivener and Caravella \u2013 both from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies<\/a>, used headset recordings to document a wide range of writing tasks in virtual and hybrid environments, with the goal of understanding how VR might influence not only what is probable, but what is possible to write.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"255\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2020\/09\/Elizabeth-Caravella.png\" alt=\"Elizabeth Caravella\" class=\"wp-image-280149\" style=\"width:318px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Elizabeth Caravella<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/06\/Rich-Shivener.jpg\" alt=\"Rich Shivener\" class=\"wp-image-396783\" style=\"width:195px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/06\/Rich-Shivener.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/06\/Rich-Shivener-290x400.jpg 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rich Shivener<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWriting has always been intertwined with technology,\u201d Caravella says. \u201cAs scholars of digital rhetoric, we see virtual reality as the next big step. Technology shapes both what and how we communicate, so it\u2019s important to lay the groundwork now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study examined how VR environments change the dynamics of invention, collaboration and friction in the writing process. Shivener notes that VR brings a sense of presence to remote collaboration that conventional video calls can\u2019t match. \u201cVR makes remote collaborative writing feel much more alive by creating that sense of being physically present together, unlike the flat feeling of staring at Zoom windows,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team found that VR platforms allow users to share virtual environments, mark up documents on theatre-sized screens and even inject moments of fun \u2013 like tossing virtual popcorn to each other during creativity breaks. These features, they say, can help spark new ideas and keep writers engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the technology is not without its hurdles. Shivener points to several significant challenges, including hardware limitations such as expensive headsets and tracking issues, as well as software problems like audio failures and display \u201ctearing.\u201d Accessibility remains a major concern, particularly for users with mobility or sensory issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome apps we reviewed do not have options for closed-captioning conversations between avatars,\u201d Shivener says. \u201cWe need more affordable headsets, writing-specific VR applications and tools that better align with accessibility guidelines, such as providing pre-recorded voice-overs for all text, including menus and installers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these obstacles, Caravella sees enormous potential for VR in education. She points to studies linking VR use with increased creativity and motivation among students<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVR gives students the ability to see and explore things they might not otherwise experience,\u201d she says. \u201cImagine being able to actually walk someone through your ideas or argument, or to give feedback in real time from anywhere in the world \u2013 the implications of this technology in the classroom are infinite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings position York at the forefront of exploring how emerging technologies can enhance teaching, learning and creative collaboration.
