Today, these tiny particles are turning up in rivers and even in treated drinking water, raising new questions for municipal water managers.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pharmaceuticals are also slipping through wastewater plants, while heavier rains are pushing flood systems to their limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>快播视频\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/onewater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One WATER Institute<\/a> is at the centre of the response. Acting as a trans-disciplinary hub, the institute connects researchers, students and municipal staff to address the region\u2019s most urgent water challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe focus on research that matches what municipalities actually need, from detecting contaminants to building flood resilience,\u201d says <strong>Farshad Dabbaghi<\/strong>, research associate at One WATER.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"858\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/07\/BEDF9928-E1D8-4DFA-90D8-344B82241A6D.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-397008\" style=\"width:671px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/07\/BEDF9928-E1D8-4DFA-90D8-344B82241A6D.png 858w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/07\/BEDF9928-E1D8-4DFA-90D8-344B82241A6D-400x267.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The strategic vision of One WATER encompasses many of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.<br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Collaboration is central to One WATER\u2019s approach. Research themes are co-created with municipal partners during round-table sessions, ensuring that priorities \u2013 from flood mitigation to watershed health \u2013 reflect real community needs. \u201cWe build partnerships through joint proposals, lab visits and working groups,\u201d Dabbaghi says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, One WATER convened 11 research clusters with York Region staff to focus on operational challenges including urban flood modelling, ultraviolet disinfection, climate resilience, nutrient recovery and the removal of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and microplastics. Through faculty presentations and roundtable discussions, this work is already informing policy, guiding infrastructure upgrades and helping to design pilot projects for local water systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate students across 快播视频 are driving much of this progress. At the <a href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lassonde School of Engineering<\/a>, <strong>Pratishtha Khurana<\/strong> explores how pharmaceutical residues \u2013 antibiotics and antidepressants among them \u2013 persist in treated wastewater, shaping new strategies to protect public health. In the same spirit of inquiry, <strong>Gaurav Bhardwaj<\/strong> investigates the impact of microplastics on the microbial communities essential to wastewater treatment, providing practical guidance for upgrading treatment plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>York researchers are also tackling water challenges in some of Canada\u2019s most remote communities. In Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, York PhD candidate <strong>Caroline Duncan<\/strong> recently completed a multi-year, community-based study on water safety, combining quantitative monitoring with local engagement. Her findings have informed subsequent research on microbial water quality, microplastics and climate impacts in northern communities, now being advanced by York alumni <strong>Audrey Tam<\/strong> (MASc), <strong>\u00c9<\/strong><strong>lan Chalmers<\/strong> (MASc), <strong>Mohammed Ibraheem<\/strong> (MASc) and <strong>Victoria Carroll<\/strong> (PhD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ontario, PhD candidate <strong>Michael De Santi<\/strong>, MASc candidate <strong>Maranath Hormiz<\/strong> and PhD graduate <strong>Ahmed AlSayed<\/strong> are applying machine learning to boost water system efficiency for the Ontario Clean Water Agency, working under the guidance of Professors <strong>Usman Khan<\/strong> and <strong>Stephanie Gora<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By aligning academic innovation with municipal needs, One WATER equips communities to navigate water complexities with science-based solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to help municipalities manage complex water issues with
