It recognizes the powerful courage, strength, resilience and hope of Black persons and communities in fighting for freedom. It recognizes the intertwined histories and enduring legacies of enslavement, imperialism and anti-Black racism. Beyond a single day in history, Emancipation Day signifies a larger, ongoing movement toward racial justice for Black Canadians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are fortunate to have at York many community members whose expertise and efforts are fuelling this movement. This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.laps.yorku.ca\/profiles\/henryn\/\">Professor <strong>Natasha Henry-Dixon<\/strong><\/a>, whose scholarship examines the history and aftermath of slavery and anti-Black racism in Canada. She shares her knowledge \u2013 and deepens others\u2019 \u2013 through diverse channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Community members interested in learning from Professor Henry-Dixon can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/02\/14\/a-walk-through-black-history-york-researchers-tour-looks-at-early-life-in-toronto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-guided walking tour<\/a> laid out by Dr. Henry-Dixon;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>watch her <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Bg2za1yncJ0?si=6lQmKltnRyTBmmlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Ontario Historical Society keynote<\/a>, \u201cThe Paradox of Slavery &amp; Freedom in 19th c. Ontario\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>read one of her many books and articles: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundurn.com\/books_\/t22117\/a9781554887170-emancipation-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emancipation Day: Celebrating Freedom in Canada<\/a><\/em>;<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundurn.com\/books_\/t22117\/a9781459700482-talking-about-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Talking About Freedom: Celebrating Emancipation Day in Canada<\/a><\/em>; <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2018\/08\/01\/freedom-abound-celebrating-emancipation-day-in-st-johns-ward-1845-1860\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom Abound: Celebrating Emancipation Day in St. John\u2019s Ward, 1845\u20131860<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca\/en\/article\/slavery-abolition-act-1833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Slavery Abolition Act, 1833<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2020\/06\/09\/if-black-lives-truly-matter-in-canada-an-apology-for-slavery-is-only-a-first-step\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">If Black Lives Truly Matter in Canada, an Apology for Slavery is only a First Step<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2020\/07\/23\/apology-truth-and-reparations-the-overdue-reckoning-with-canadas-slave-past\/\">Apology, Truth, and Reparations: the Overdue Reckoning with Canada\u2019s Slave Past<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2025\/05\/13\/they-were-right-here-tracing-black-people-enslaved-in-the-town-of-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They Were Right Here: Tracing Black People Enslaved in the Town of York<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explore the online exhibit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov.on.ca\/en\/explore\/online\/enslavedafricans\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Slavery and Abolition in Upper Canada<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attend a talk on July 31: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.dundasmuseum.ca\/product\/not-yet-free-black-enslavement-in-the-hamilton-burlington-region-slavery-in-upper-canada-before-1834-featuring-dr-natasha-l-henry-dixon\/\">Not Yet Free: Black Enslavement in the Hamilton-Burlington Region &amp; Slavery in Upper Canada Before 1834<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing on the contemporary lives of Black Canadians: <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.laps.yorku.ca\/profiles\/ddejesus\/\">Professor <\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.laps.yorku.ca\/profiles\/ddejesus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Desir\u00e9e de Jesus<\/a><\/strong> explores Black girlhood and belonging in Canada, work that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/02\/05\/york-u-profs-art-project-on-black-girlhood-in-canada-coming-to-tiff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exhibited at the Toronto International Film Festival<\/a> (TIFF) Lightbox building in February; <a href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/users\/alvinebelle\">Professor <\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/users\/alvinebelle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alvine Boaye Belle<\/a><\/strong> is working to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/01\/31\/lassonde-professor-champions-diversity-inclusion-in-role-as-mentor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">break down systemic barriers<\/a> for under-represented students pursuing STEM studies through the Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology (IBET) PhD project; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/globalhealth\/faculty-research\/our-faculty-members\/full-time-faculty-members\/godfred-boateng\/\">Professor <\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/globalhealth\/faculty-research\/our-faculty-members\/full-time-faculty-members\/godfred-boateng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Godfred Boateng<\/a><\/strong>, director of the Global &amp; Environmental Health Lab and a Canada Research Chair in Global Health and Humanitarianism, leads a project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/03\/07\/york-researcher-tackles-justice-system-anxiety-in-black-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connecting Black youth and their families with tools<\/a> to help them cope with anxiety resulting from experiences with the justice system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts to counter anti-Black racism and to promote thriving of Black students, staff and faculty members on York\u2019s campuses are guided by the Addressing Anti-Black Racism: A Framework on Black Inclusion<em> <\/em>and its accompanying action plan. Both documents, along with annual reports on activities and progress, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/abr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please take time on Emancipation Day not only to reflect on the history of anti-Black racism and resistance to oppression in Canada, but also to look toward \u2013 and work toward \u2013 a future of racial justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you.
