Just louder yeses.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One lawyer, more used to cross-examinations than quick quips, takes a breath and blurts out, \u201cThank you and I want to \u2026 invent a talking stapler!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group bursts into laughter. And just like that, the exercise is working.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the next few hours, these legal professionals \u2013 masters of control and preparation \u2013 are being asked to do the opposite. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They discover that the same skills that make a great improv scene such as listening, reacting, building on others\u2019 ideas, can also make them better in the courtroom, boardroom and beyond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professionals in many sectors are trained to prepare and then prepare some more. Osgoode Professional Development\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/osgoodepd.ca\/professional-development\/short-courses-and-conferences\/improved-communication-skills-a-workshop-for-professionals-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Improv(ed) Communication Skills: a Workshop for Professionals<\/a>\u201d flips that idea on its head.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very cool program that focuses on skills not typically covered in most legal or professional training,\u201d says <strong>Gail Margaret Geronimo<\/strong>, program lawyer for the one-day workshop offered through 快播视频\u2019s Osgoode PD. \u201cLawyers are primarily trained to be prepared. This focuses on being present \u2013 thinking on your feet without preparation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a profession where every word is carefully chosen and every argument meticulously structured, improv offers a refreshing counterbalance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interactive online workshop introduces the fundamentals of improvisation and how they can be applied to professional communication. Key improv skills \u2013 embracing risk, reacting to the unexpected and staying in the moment \u2013 translate into real-world skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offered for more than a decade, the workshop was originally developed for lawyers; now, it\u2019s open legal and other professionals looking to strengthen communication and collaboration skills, says Geronimo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis includes people in positions requiring leadership, litigation, negotiation skills or conflict resolution skills \u2013 essentially, anyone who needs to respond effectively in the moment and rely on clear, adaptive interaction,\u201d she says. \u201cWe notice that professionals need these skills on a day-to-day basis. Communicating in a way that involves being present and actively listening is a skill that\u2019s so important to perform effectively as professionals.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as a bonus, it\u2019s taught by Lisa Merchant, a seasoned performer and instructor with Toronto\u2019s Second City, the comedy improve theatre troupe, who has over 30 years of experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLisa is fantastic,\u201d says Geronimo. \u201cShe gets people on their feet. She\u2019s done a good job of making the class engaging and maintaining a comfortable, safe space.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merchant is a senior faculty member at Second City Training Centre and a professor at Humber College, recognized for her award-winning comedy work and television appearances. She received multiple accolades in 2019, including the <em>Toronto Star<\/em>\u2019s Best Theatre Instructor (Platinum) and Second City\u2019s Frank McAnuity Faculty Award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During COVID, the class transitioned from in-person to online, making it accessible to professionals outside the GTA. And with Merchant running the show, the workshop continued its momentum through the pandemic and beyond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t do it as successfully online without an engaging facilitator,\u201d says Geronimo. \u201cLisa really brings a lot of energy and draws people in.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The half-day class features classical improvisation exercises and drills, with full live participation. No content is recorded, unlike other online courses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are no recordings, no scripts and no retakes \u2013 just spontaneous participation. The whole tenet of improv is being present,\u201d says Geronimo. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants practice thinking on their feet, answering questions on the fly and speaking with confidence and poise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geronimo says the class gives professionals a rare chance to stretch their skills in a low-stakes setting. \u201cYou can take chances without consequences,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a practice zone where you can explore, experiment and grow.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next session runs Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany people come into the class nervous,\u201d says Geronimo, \u201cbut they all leave energized and excited about what they learned.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>With files from Karen
