{"id":402565,"date":"2026-01-07T14:07:52","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T19:07:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=402565"},"modified":"2026-01-07T14:07:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T19:07:55","slug":"new-teaching-fellows-program-to-drive-innovation-in-higher-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2026\/01\/07\/new-teaching-fellows-program-to-drive-innovation-in-higher-education\/","title":{"rendered":"New\u00a0Teaching Fellows Program to drive innovation in\u00a0higher education\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new&nbsp;initiative&nbsp;will strengthen teaching and learning at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ by empowering faculty members to lead innovation in pedagogy across disciplines.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/vptl\/teaching-fellows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teaching Fellows&nbsp;Program<\/a>&nbsp;provides faculty with&nbsp;resources&nbsp;to&nbsp;explore challenges, develop creative strategies for professional growth and advance excellence in teaching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/vptl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of the Vice-Provost Teaching and Learning<\/a>, the&nbsp;program&nbsp;promotes faculty-led initiatives in priority areas, celebrates outstanding&nbsp;teaching&nbsp;and enhances the classroom experience for both instructors and students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the fellowship, participants will:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>lead&nbsp;University-wide and Faculty-based teaching development projects;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>engage in a community of practice to address emerging issues in post-secondary education; and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collaborate&nbsp;with colleagues and&nbsp;the&nbsp;Teaching Commons to enrich teaching and learning across&nbsp;the University.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative reflects York\u2019s commitment to advancing inclusive, evidence-based&nbsp;and future-ready teaching practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Teaching Fellows Program harnesses the expertise of faculty members to enable peer-to-peer and discipline-specific teaching development and to facilitate a focused engagement with pedagogical issues impacting post-secondary teaching and learning,\u201d&nbsp;says&nbsp;<strong>Chlo\u00eb Brushwood Rose<\/strong>, vice-provost&nbsp;teaching&nbsp;and learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Priority&nbsp;for the first cohort of fellows&nbsp;was given to teaching stream applicants, whose contributions to pedagogy are often under-recognized, says Brushwood Rose. The program aims to elevate these voices and share their innovations more broadly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe&nbsp;fellowships will offer colleagues time and funding to amplify and share ideas and expertise that we know they are already implementing in their own classrooms,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2026-27 cohort spans diverse disciplines and career stages, each bringing a unique vision for enhancing student learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meet the inaugural&nbsp;teaching&nbsp;fellows<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"267\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2026\/01\/Lesley-Zannella-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Lesley Zannella\" class=\"wp-image-402573\" style=\"width:140px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2026\/01\/Lesley-Zannella-edited.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2026\/01\/Lesley-Zannella-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lesley Zannella<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Lesley&nbsp;Zannella<\/strong>, assistant professor in psychology,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Health<\/a>,&nbsp;focuses on inclusive pedagogy, experiential&nbsp;learning&nbsp;and equity. She has led initiatives such as an innovative capstone course integrating community-based learning and applying psychological theory to real-world issues. Her scholarship reflects a sustained commitment to evidence-based, inclusive teaching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her fellowship will expand the In-Class Peer Partner (ICPP) model, embedding trained upper-year students in undergraduate classes for real-time support. Her initiatives include a partnership with the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, where students engage in ethnographic storytelling using archival photos and oral histories. She has received\u00a0Academic\u00a0Innovation Fund and Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada support for this work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davidson\u2019s fellowship will enhance AI literacy in the social sciences, focusing on first-year students and work-integrated learning. Davidson will develop experiential AI modules with cultural heritage partners, addressing ethical and cultural implications. He has led initiatives integrating creative research with inclusive, tech-enabled learning, including a cross-hemispheric classroom linking York with Australian universities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his fellowship, Garrett will develop \u201cnetworked learning ecologies\u201d to create adaptive, inclusive classrooms.
