{"id":403470,"date":"2026-01-30T13:45:47","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T18:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=403470"},"modified":"2026-03-05T15:22:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T20:22:45","slug":"scholarship-growth-boosts-opportunities-for-black-students-at-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2026\/01\/30\/scholarship-growth-boosts-opportunities-for-black-students-at-york\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholarship growth boosts opportunities for Black students at York"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Every year, the Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars shines a light on Black students in 快播视频\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies<\/a> (LA&amp;PS), highlighting academic excellence and emerging leadership.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The renewable scholarship supports incoming undergraduate students and provides $5,000 in annual funding to help remove financial barriers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Tom Janes award is such a high-impact award,\u201d says <strong>Daniel Kikulwe<\/strong>, interim associate dean of students, LA&amp;PS. \u201cIt follows each student throughout their undergraduate time at York, encouraging them and supporting degree completion.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Created by the Janes family in memory of Tom Janes, the program aims to support Black students in achieving success. The family has pledged over $1.5 million to the program to date. \u201cWe wanted a way to help students who otherwise might be held back for various reasons. It means a lot to us to see so many students succeeding at York,\u201d said Lem Janes, brother of the late Tom Janes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fourth-year international development studies student <strong>Gabrielle Viola Curate<\/strong>, a recipient of the scholarship, says the award has created opportunities and pathways to success during her time at York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis award allows me to continue my studies with greater focus and determination,\u201d she shares. \u201cIt has opened a door that many Black women, like my mother, have not had the opportunity to walk through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First-year political science student <strong>Sylvan Lewis<\/strong> says he is honoured to be selected as a recipient of the scholarship and aspires to make meaningful contributions to policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKnowing that my work and my potential are being recognized has strengthened my confidence and motivation during this important first year of study,\u201d he says. \u201cI am deeply grateful to Lem and Karen Janes for their generosity in memory of Tom Janes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curate and Lewis are among the 28 students who are current award holders \u2013 from first to fourth year and across a variety of programs, including Information Technology, Law &amp; Society, Human Rights &amp; Equity Studies, Commerce, English and more.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kikulwe notes the award\u2019s impact is felt by students throughout their time at York and beyond, adding that 10 student recipients have already graduated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bachelor of commerce alum <strong>Tigist Solomon<\/strong> credits the Tom Janes Award with giving him not only crucial financial support but also \u201cthe confidence and encouragement to pursue my goals with purpose.\u201d Solomon has been working in a professional marketing role since graduating in Spring of 2025 and says the award reinforced for him \u201cthe importance of perseverance, community and giving back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat inspires us most is seeing these students excel and become leaders,\u201d says Kikulwe. \u201cThis award shows what is possible when students are offered
