  {"id":405515,"date":"2026-04-02T14:11:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T18:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=405515"},"modified":"2026-04-06T14:45:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T18:45:08","slug":"york-nursing-uses-global-learning-to-advance-gender-affirming-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2026\/04\/02\/york-nursing-uses-global-learning-to-advance-gender-affirming-care\/","title":{"rendered":"York nursing uses global learning to advance gender-affirming care"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research led by ¿ì²¥ÊÓÆµ's <strong>Roya Haghiri-Vijeh<\/strong> is embracing&nbsp;Globally Networked Learning&nbsp;(GNL) for&nbsp;nursing collaboration on&nbsp;2SLGBTQIA+ care.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, a Canadian-wide review of undergraduate nursing programs found that of all 2SLGBTQIA+ topics, gender-affirming care was the least included in the curriculum. Haghiri-Vijehan, assistant professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Health<\/a>, was not surprised given her own experience as an educator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe literature shows that 2SLGBTQIA+ communities are not feeling safe and health care spaces are not affirming of their needs,\u201d she says. \u201cWe need to include this as part of our education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she considered how to incorporate more affirming care practices into her Community Health Nursing course, Haghiri\u2011Vijeh turned to an asynchronous learning tool called the Sexual Orientation Gender Identity Virtual Simulation (SOGI VS). The open\u2011access platform offers five\u2011 to eight\u2011hour modules featuring common patient scenarios, using interactive simulations to help learners identify appropriate, affirming approaches to care.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"905\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/05\/Roya-Haghiri-Vijeh-1-905x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Roya Haghiri-Vijeh\" class=\"wp-image-395204\" style=\"width:236px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/05\/Roya-Haghiri-Vijeh-1-905x1024.jpeg 905w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/05\/Roya-Haghiri-Vijeh-1-354x400.jpeg 354w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/05\/Roya-Haghiri-Vijeh-1-1358x1536.jpeg 1358w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/05\/Roya-Haghiri-Vijeh-1-1811x2048.jpeg 1811w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 905px) 100vw, 905px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Roya Haghiri-Vijeh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Haghiri-Vijeh integrated the tool into her course, but went a step further when she learned about York\u2019s GNL initiative. The opportunity sparked a new idea: what if this simulation could become the foundation of a shared international assignment? It seemed like a powerful way to bring students in two countries into conversation, help them build intercultural competence and test whether a reflective, virtual global partnership could support that growth. Just as importantly, she hoped the project might serve as a practical model for other nursing programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To bring the collaboration to life, the GNL team at York connected Haghiri\u2011Vijeh with Alice Wong, a nursing lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process behind that has now been published in a paper in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0260691726000195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nursing Education Today<\/a><\/em>. Wong is a co-author along with York colleague <strong>Karen A. Campbell<\/strong> and York master\u2019s student <strong>Camille Alcalde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the paper, the team outlines how they shaped the shared assignment. Early on, Haghiri\u2011Vijeh and Wong came together to learn about each other\u2019s institutions, consult with their universities\u2019 GNL offices, test the simulation tool and work together to design their co\u2011teaching approach.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"841\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/12\/Karen-Campbell-scaled-e1701720355673-841x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Karen Campbell\" class=\"wp-image-346561\" style=\"width:242px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/12\/Karen-Campbell-scaled-e1701720355673-841x1024.jpg 841w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/12\/Karen-Campbell-scaled-e1701720355673-328x400.jpg 328w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/12\/Karen-Campbell-scaled-e1701720355673.jpg 972w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 841px) 100vw, 841px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Karen Campbell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>They aligned the assignment timelines across their courses while keeping the activities asynchronous to accommodate the 12\u2011hour time difference. Students were required to complete the SOGI VS modules on their own and write a three\u2011page reflection connecting the experience to their specific placements or practicums. They also submitted an aesthetic piece of their choosing \u2013 a song, image, drawing or other creative representation \u2013 to capture how the coursework resonated with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, the students were paired across the two countries. York and HKBU partners exchanged reflections and offered constructive feedback. Guiding questions encouraged students to explore similarities and differences between their placements, and to reflect on at least one social determinant of health and one UN Sustainable Development Goal. Then students were asked to write a second reflection capturing what they had learned from the dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the exchanges unfolded, both faculty and students began to see the impact of the work. Assignments and class discussions showed students learning about approaches to 2SLGBTQIA+ care in another country, but also about the social and institutional contexts shaping those approaches. Faculty gathered informal feedback through conversations and the student assignments, and identified increased awareness around issues such as cis-normativity, power dynamics in health care organizations and the importance of inclusive policies and representation in clinical settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the project concluded, its success prompted Haghiri\u2011Vijeh to write about it with the hope of inspiring similar efforts across the field. A second paper is already under consideration with another major journal, this time exploring the data more closely to identify implications for nursing education. Three students are also developing autoethnographies based on their participation, and several alumni have presented their work at international conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haghiri\u2011Vijeh continues to advance her work through a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/limesurvey.umontreal.ca\/965645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call for survey participants<\/a> to learn about migrant 2SLGBTQIA+ students\u2019 sense of belonging and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Haghiri\u2011Vijeh, student involvement has been among the most meaningful outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere possible, we engage students in the writing and co\u2011creation of knowledge,\u201d she says. \u201cAsking them if they would like to be involved builds capacity for them, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is eager to continue the initiative, including with partners beyond nursing. Conversations are already underway with U.S.-based colleagues in psychology and social work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI'm a big believer that if you're doing anything that might be innovative or helpful for others, you have to share it,\u201d she says. \u201cYou have to mobilize your knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>With files from Suzanne
