  {"id":405659,"date":"2026-04-22T15:43:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T19:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=405659"},"modified":"2026-04-22T17:38:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T21:38:22","slug":"york-kinesiology-students-create-practical-tools-for-sport-equity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2026\/04\/22\/york-kinesiology-students-create-practical-tools-for-sport-equity\/","title":{"rendered":"York kinesiology students create practical tools for sport equity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upper-year kinesiology and health students at ¿ì²¥ÊÓÆµ are translating academic learning into community-engaged research and knowledge mobilization that supports equity and inclusion in sport development and social justice.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Health<\/a>\u2019s fourth-year course Sport and International Development (KINE 4310) that engages students in community-driven projects with local and global organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/Lyndsay-Hayhurst-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Lyndsay Hayhurst\" class=\"wp-image-398015\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7998138370921964;width:242px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/Lyndsay-Hayhurst-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/Lyndsay-Hayhurst-320x400.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/Lyndsay-Hayhurst-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/Lyndsay-Hayhurst-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/Lyndsay-Hayhurst-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lyndsay Hayhurst<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Led by Associate Professor <strong>Lyndsay Hayhurst<\/strong> as part of a community-service learning (CSL) initiative, 45 undergraduate students partnered with seven organizations \u2013 Jays Care Foundation, Commonwealth Sport Canada, Free to Run, Skateistan, Prezdential Basketball, Canadian Women &amp; Sport and the International Platform on Sport and Development \u2013 to effect real-world change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working in small groups, students contributed approximately 25 hours over the term to support partner-identified priorities related to: gender equity; monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning; newcomer inclusion and belonging; climate justice; and youth development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each group developed a structured work plan, maintained regular communication with their partner organization and completed a midterm progress report and final report outlining their research, analysis and recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A core focus of the course was knowledge mobilization, with students producing accessible, action-oriented resources designed to be used in practice by organizations. These&nbsp;outputs&nbsp;included&nbsp;monitoring,&nbsp;evaluation,&nbsp;accountability&nbsp;and&nbsp;learning (MEAL) toolkits, policy briefs, infographics, coaching&nbsp;resources&nbsp;and digital content strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course concluded with a final in-class conference where students presented their knowledge mobilization outputs to partner organizations followed by discussion and feedback from partners and peers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2026\/04\/Prez.Image2_.April-2026-edited-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of each student group presenting during final KINE 4310 conference. (Photo by Bisma Imtiaz)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Partner organizations&nbsp;said the presentations&nbsp;offered&nbsp;practical relevance,&nbsp;clarity&nbsp;and creativity of the&nbsp;presentations, noting that several recommendations&nbsp;would&nbsp;be adopted to&nbsp;inform ongoing programming,&nbsp;evaluation&nbsp;and policy development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work, Hayhurst notes, highlights how students are engaging with contemporary challenges shaping sport and development practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One project, for example, worked on a policy brief on trans and non-binary inclusion for Canadian Women &amp; Sport just as the International Olympic Committee released new guidance on trans athletes participating in women\u2019s sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe real-time policy shift&nbsp;that is widely interpreted as excluding trans athletes from women\u2019s sports&nbsp;brought urgency to&nbsp;the group\u2019s presentation and sparked&nbsp;conversations about how community sport organizations in Canada can respond with more inclusive,&nbsp;equity-focused&nbsp;approaches,\u201d&nbsp;says Hayhurst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jays&nbsp;Care student group&nbsp;worked on researching&nbsp;how youth-facing barriers to sport participation \u2013 and the efforts to address them \u2013 shape access, retention and experiences in community baseball.&nbsp;The project&nbsp;maintained&nbsp;a specific gender analysis, with attention to girls\u2019 participation in the broader&nbsp;community-based&nbsp;landscape.&nbsp;Working with Jays Care, students presented&nbsp;an infographic exploring how&nbsp;equity, access, safe spaces, inclusive environments and meaningful participation&nbsp;translate (or&nbsp;fail to&nbsp;translate) into tangible outcomes for&nbsp;girls&nbsp;in baseball&nbsp;across Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alexandra Blanchard<\/strong>, director of strategy at Jays Care Foundation and York alum, says working\u00a0with the students was positive experience, noting they\u00a0were enthusiastic, curious and a pleasure to engage with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt's energizing to connect with the next generation of students who are passionate about the&nbsp;field&nbsp;and I'd jump at the chance to do it again,\u201d says Blanchard. \u201cUniversity partnerships like this are a wonderful way to bridge research and community practice, and we'd recommend the experience to any community organization looking to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to applied research experience, the CSL model supports skill development in research, communication, teamwork and problem-solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis course has run for the last 10 years&nbsp;with the goal of moving beyond traditional learning by engaging students in collaborative, community-driven projects,\u201d&nbsp;says Hayhurst.&nbsp;\u201cStudents are not only developing critical&nbsp;insights&nbsp;into sport, development and social justice, but importantly, they are also creating tangible knowledge mobilization outputs that will be taken up in practice by community
