One of the foundational relationships of the graduate student experience is the one between the graduate student and supervisor. As part of our 60th-anniversary celebrations, the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York is hosting a one-day online Graduate Supervision Conference geared specifically for graduate supervisors.

Partnering with Memorial University of Newfoundland, the conference is called "Collaborative, Constructive, Considerate: Fostering Dialogue on Best Practices in Graduate Supervision in Canada" and will be held Friday, May 31, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The conference will bring together graduate supervisors from universities across Canada with the aim to foster dialogue about best practices in supervisory pedagogy, says Dr. Cheryl van Daalen-Smith, Conference Chair and Associate Dean, Academic, Graduate Studies at York.

"We need to continue talking about principles and best practices." She said the conference is filling a need for schools of graduate studies who understand that more conversations have to happen about supervision. "There's an assumption one learns to be a supervisor by being supervised themselves as a graduate student when there鈥檚 so much more to it."

2024 Grad Supervision Conference official asset

驰辞谤办鈥檚 University Academic Plan 2020鈥2025 recognizes an ambitious agenda for the continued growth and application of our research, scholarship, and creative activity. Two of the UAP鈥檚 six priorities for action speak to 21st Century Learning and Knowledge for the Future. A community of changemakers, Graduate Studies takes the goals of increasing the research participation of faculty and trainees at all levels across the university, accelerating growth in the number and diversity of our scholarly and artistic outputs and research funding base to heart.

A leading international teaching and research university united by a strong sense of purpose and long-standing commitment to public good, York is committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal number 4: Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all.

A cornerstone of the academic environment, graduate education and the graduate supervisory experience play a pivotal role in shaping student鈥檚 academic and professional journeys. This relationship has a profound effect on the quality of research produced, development of academic skills and the overall academic experience.

The conference begins with a welcome from Dr. Alice MacLachlan, York's Vice-Provost & Dean, Graduate Studies, who will be joined by Dr. Philippe-Edwin B茅langer, CAGS President & Director of Student Services at Institut national de la recherche scientifique INRS, Quebec City and van Daalen-Smith for remarks.

The opening keynote will be delivered by Dr. Bruce Shore, author of the conference鈥檚 key publication The Graduate Advisor Handbook: A Student-Centred Approach who will give a talk entitled: Connections to Quagmires: Setting Up for Successful Supervision. A second keynote will follow, delivered by Heather McGhee Peggs will examine When Grad Things Happen: Power, Pressure & Personalities. McGhee Peggs is the author of a book on Supervising Conflict which offers practical advice and tools to help faculty identify and respond to the most common grad school concerns.

The first panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Ian Wereley, Executive Director, Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS), will examine Ontario鈥檚 Principles of Graduate Supervision: An Initiative and Strategy for Supporting Graduate Supervision. Discussing the principles will be Dr. Suzanne Curtin, Dean, Graduate Studies at Brock University, Dr. Jeff Casello, Associate Vice President, Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs at the University of Waterloo and Dr. Andr茅 M. Beauchemin, Vice-Provost Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Ottawa.

Following a short lunch break, Dr. Rhonda Joy, Associate Dean, Graduate Programs and Research at the Memorial University of Newfoundland will moderate a fireside chat with graduate supervisory award winners Dr Benjamin Berger from York, Dr. Brent Snook from Memorial and Dr. Fanie Pelletier from the Universit茅 de Sherbrooke. The participants will reflect upon their experiences and focus on ways their supervisory practices reflect collaborative, constructive and considerate supervision practices鈥攊ncluding how they tailor their mentorship for international students. They will also discuss what they wished they had known then, what they know now and how supervision has changed them.

The day will finish off with a Go-Forward Closing Discussion moderated by van Daalen-Smith and featuring incoming CAGS President Dr. Fahim Quadir, Vice-Provost and Dean, School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs at Queen's University and Dr. Ian Wereley, Executive Director CAGS who will discuss Envisioning National Principles on Graduate Supervision: A CAGS Working Group Initiative which will envision mobilizing a working group initiative led by CAGS towards the establishment of Canadian graduate supervision principles.

The conference is a follow-up to the national CAGS conference in 2023, where graduate supervision conversations filled every meeting room, van Daalen-Smith says. "We need to celebrate great supervision, and foster discussions that identify exactly what it is that makes this pivotal educative role in graduate studies so influential.鈥

Registration for the conference is free and is now open. RSVP via the conference website.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is celebrating 60 years of knowledge creation, and we want to mark this milestone in a meaningful way. Just ahead of the holidays, we want to send a shout-out to all graduate educators, supervisors, committee members and students from your colleagues at the Faculty of Graduate Studies! We see you and want to let you know that we are planning something with you in mind that we hope will be both materially valuable and meaningful. Something grounded in dignity, mutuality and capacity-building.

Graduate education stands as a cornerstone in the academic landscape and the quality of the graduate supervisory experience plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic and professional trajectories of students. The dynamics of this relationship profoundly impact the quality of research, the development of professional skills, and the overall academic experience. Inside of these relationships where student development is central are valuable faculty colleagues who matter to us. With that in mind, we wanted to find a way to wrap around graduate supervisors, committee members and graduate students and begin to vision. We quickly recognized that to plan and enact something like this we needed to secure funding. Thankfully, 快播视频鈥檚 Academic Innovation Fund (AIF) granted Faculty of Graduate Studies Associate Dean, Academic Dr. Cheryl van Daalen-Smith with a three-year grant for the establishment of a Graduate Supervision Support Hub (GSSHub). Recognizing the multifaceted challenges and opportunities inherent in the supervision process, we are taking a transformative step by introducing the Graduate Supervision Support Hub and rooting it in principles of dignity, mutuality and effective supervisory practices. With this pan-university initiative, we intend to cultivate and support an ethos of dignity around mutually beneficial supervisory relationships drawing on graduate supervisory pedagogy and capacity-building principles that recognize the pivotal role of effective supervision in graduate education.

Photo of students working collaboratively

At the core of the envisioned GSSHub is the promotion of supervisory relationships enveloped in mutuality. Acknowledging the diverse needs and expectations of supervisors and students, we want to keep relationships at the center with an ethos of dignity folded into every aspect and explicit regard for the inherent value of both the supervisor and the student. By fostering a culture of trust and collaboration, the GSSHub aims to enhance the overall graduate supervisory experience for everyone involved.

This approach acknowledges that good supervision is not innate, nor solely about overseeing research projects but is a relationship that requires mentorship, guidance, ethics, mutual respect, collaborative goal setting and skill development. In graduate education, students and supervisors encounter various challenges such as communication gaps, differing expectations and navigating interpersonal relationships and academia, so the aim is to address challenges with effective practices, capacity building, a centralized platform for support and guidance, and a toolkit of resources fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement in supervision methods.

To ensure the pan-university GSSHub aligns with the diverse needs of our academic community, we extend a call to all partners 鈥 颅颅graduate students and faculty members颅 鈥 to actively engage with us as we seek input and guidance. By participating in consultations and sharing invaluable experiences and insights, you can help shape the development, initiatives and effectiveness of the proposed GSSHub which will empower supervisors and students to thrive in their academic pursuits making it a true reflection of the collective vision for effective supervision support.

Stay tuned for a brief survey for graduate supervisors in winter 2024 where we will seek to gather your input as to what supports and services the GSSHub might provide. For now, we are gathering names of folks who want to be heard and planning a listening tour including more consultations. We hope you will write to us and indicate your willingness to contribute. To do so, you are invited to contact the Graduate Supervision Support Hub Program Manager, Tracy Bhoola at tbhoola@yorku.ca.

We look forward to co-creating this with you,

Cheryl van Daalen-Smith, Wesley Moir & Tracy Bhoola

Thank you for your interest in pursuing graduate studies at 快播视频. A good understanding of the application process is very important to a successful application. Your first step is to review all admission and application requirements for your chosen program of study before beginning the process.

Preparing your application to graduate studies at 快播视频 and/or other interested universities requires research and planning. Some students start preparing their plans for graduate studies as early as two years before they submit their applications. Consider the following timelines to help guide you through a successful application process.

Ten Early Steps to Preparing a Competitive Application

You鈥檝e made the decision to go for it. Here are some early considerations for your application. Note: Early means starting at least a year prior to the deadline with the first steps.

  1. Identify programs and professors of interest.
  2. Actively involve yourself in your field of study and keep your grades up.
  3. Build relationships with the professionals you would like as your recommenders.
  4. Prepare for testing required for admission (e.g., GRE, MCAT, GMAT).
  5. Research and apply for merit-based external funding.
  6. Make note of application deadlines and required documents.
  7. Write your Statement of Interest and writing samples.
  8. Update your resume.
  9. Have your transcripts sent to 快播视频 (if you are not already a York student).
  10. Submit your application and all supporting documents by the respective deadlines. Your entire application to York, including the supporting materials, can be submitted online at .

Grad School - Supplementary Materials

What Makes a Good Statement of Interest?

The Statement of Interest is your chance to shine during the application process, your opportunity to stand out from the crowd and make the case for your acceptance into your program of choice. The statement needs to reflect who you are and what would make you an asset to the program in 500 to 1,000 words.

On the most concrete level, your statement will have to answer these four questions:

  1. What would you like to study in graduate school?
  2. What motivated you to choose your field and the particular program to which you are applying?
  3. How are your past studies and experiences relevant to your program choice?
  4. What do you plan to achieve with your graduate degree? There is also a fifth, overarching question:
  5. What makes you unique compared to other candidates?

Use the following guidelines to help keep you on track as you compose the best Statement of Interest possible:

  1. Prepare. Research your program, check to see if the committee wants specific questions answered in the statement, brainstorm about your goals, experiences, motivations and how they fit with your program of choice.
  2. Be coherent. Create a unifying theme in your narrative by linking your points with continuity and focus to give meaning and a sense of purpose to your statement.
  3. Be specific. Demonstrate your points by example, creating a scene in the mind鈥檚 eye. As in all writing, show, don鈥檛 tell. If you find this difficult, keep asking yourself 鈥渉ow鈥 at each point.
  4. Be bold. Don鈥檛 hide behind bland generalities and make sure the voice your reader hears is unmistakably yours. Don鈥檛 confuse boldness with hubris, though.
  5. Be concise. Stay on point, write in an active voice and choose your words mindfully.

It always helps to have a trusted friend or colleague review your statement. As you revise, keep in mind the importance of form: your opening paragraph sets the tone, your final lines leave a lasting impression and what you present in your statement matters as much as how you present it.

How to Request the Letter of Recommendation You Want

Letters of Recommendation help admissions committees gauge your academic aptitude and future potential, and while you cannot control what someone says or if they鈥檒l meet the deadline, you can follow a few steps that will make the process as smooth 鈥 and successful 鈥 as possible.

Build relationships. Your recommenders should know you well. Good letters of recommendation are always the outcome of solid relationships established long before an application due date.

Choose wisely. Pick individuals who can speak with familiarity and specificity to your scholarship, skills and personality. Have at least one person who can situate you in your academic field. If someone declines your request for a recommendation, take no for an answer.

Be the early bird. The professionals recommending you are busy people, so approach them early to give them enough time to write a thoughtful letter (4-6 weeks recommended).

Come prepared. Give your recommenders solid supporting materials to help them write: information about the program and school you are applying to; your Statement of Interest; your resume; a writing sample; unofficial transcripts; any points you鈥檇 particularly like them to focus on; the addressee and deadline for the letter.

Follow up. Don鈥檛 be shy to check in about a week before the letter is due, and make sure to thank recommenders for their time once all is said and done. Also let them know the outcome of your application, successful or not. It鈥檚 another way to keep building the relationship.

Do I Need an Academic Supervisor?

Unless you鈥檙e choosing a coursework-only option, yes. But check with your program of choice to find out whether it generally assigns supervisors or whether you need to find one ahead of your application.

Because supervisors oversee your academic work, they should share your research interests. Take the time to ensure your chosen program has a person you would like to work with and that the sentiment is mutual.

The admission process is a collaboration between the Office of Graduate Admissions and the Graduate Program.

Required documents and submission deadlines differ by program; make sure you know what they are and when they鈥檙e due by visiting the appropriate program page. All documentation submitted becomes the property of 快播视频 and cannot be returned.

Please visit  for more information.

Individual program application deadlines can be found on the page.

Have you applied by the deadline? If so,  to your application after you have applied.

At the core of a student's program is the formation of a supervisory relationship with a faculty member, along with a supervisory committee. This committee is a way to establish and maintain close contact with faculty members who share similar orientations and interests. While the committee is particularly important when working on the thesis, if it is in place early enough, the members can also act as academic advisors. Within the general parameters of program requirements, the supervisory committee is largely responsible for advising students on a course of study appropriate to their interests, assessing their work and progress, and for professional mentoring.

As a prospective student, you are responsible for seeking out a potential supervisor to help guide your graduate career.

  • Visit the  in your field and review faculty profiles to identify work that aligns with your research interest(s).
