Certificate in Information Technology

At ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ’s IEP IT Bridging Program, you will complete three university-level courses to ensure your soft skills and IT program skills are top notch. Two foundation courses provide a full overview and practice of communication, teamwork, cross-cultural problem solving, leadership, and management skills within the Canadian context. The Object-Oriented Programming foundation course provides fundamental Java programming skills to refresh and update your training in other programming languages. The Certificate also lets you take up to five advanced-level university IT courses (15 credits) in your area of IT specialization. Through these specialized courses, you will acquire up to date local professional knowledge and skills in your areas of expertise.

Step One

Jumpstart to Success (Optional)

You will first complete an orientation session and then the language preparation program. You will be evaluated on English language skills and commitment to the program (attendance, participation, completion, adherence to assignment deadlines, etc.). Performance in this Jumpstart to Success course will determine if you continue in our Bridging Program.

Step Two

Foundations Skills

As an IEP candidate, you will be exposed to the Canadian business and cultural landscape through Foundations courses. The program will give you a full understanding and practice of teamwork, cross-cultural problem solving, communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, leadership and management skills within the Canadian context.

IT professionals complete the following courses for a total of 9 credits:

This course increases the communicative competence of Internationally Educated Professionals (IEP) in both business writing and presentation skills, while increasing their ability to analyse and negotiate the Canadian landscape of their chosen profession. Direct instruction is combined with simulations, discussions and group activities to develop clear, accurate, effective oral and written communication. Course credit exclusion: AP/WRIT 3989 3.00. Note: Open only to Participants in the Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Professionals.

Provides an overview of the Canadian business environment and focuses on the development of management skills for Internationally Educated Professionals (IEP). Theoretical instruction is combined with case analyses and teamwork exercises to develop a comprehensive understanding of the course material. Open only to Participants in the Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Professionals in Business, Finance and Administration. Prerequisite: Score of 5.5 on YELT or equivalent. Course credit exclusions: AP/ADMS 1000 3.00, AP/ADMS 2400 3.00, AP/ADMS 3040 3.00, AP/ADMS 3930 3.00, AP/HRM 3440 3.00.

Provides the fundamental Java programming skills to Internationally Educated Professionals who already have some computer programming training in other programming languages. Java programming is today the most utilized software development tool in the Canadian industry. Presents an overview of Java-based object-oriented programming and covers class implementation, object-oriented design (with UML), graphics user interfaces, event programming and data structures. Course credit exclusions: AP/ITEC 1620 3.00, AP/ITEC 2610 3.00, LE/CSE 1020 3.00 (prior to Fall 2014), LE/CSE 1030 3.00 (prior to Fall 2014). PRIOR TO SUMMER 2013: Course credit exclusions: AP/ITEC 1620 3.00, AP/ITEC 2610 3.00, SC/CSE 1020 3.00, SC/CSE 1030 3.00.

Step Three

Customize your Studies

The program lets you take up to five advanced level university IT courses (15 credits) in your area of specialization (at least three courses/9 credits have to be at the 4000-level). Potential specializations include Business Intelligence (ITEC4010, ITEC4030, ITEC4040), Enterprise Computing (ITEC4020, ITEC4050, ITEC4060, ITEC4101), Advanced Database Systems (ITEC4020, ITEC4220, ITEC4230), and Data Science (ITEC 4230, ITEC4305, ITEC4310). You may qualify to take courses in other areas such as cybersecurity. Specific courses suitable to your interests and background will be selected in conjunction with a faculty mentor and approval.
