Science Rendezvous

Science Rendezvous is an annual family festival that takes science out of the lab and onto the streets across Canada! Every year we team up with Main Street Markham to host the event at the award-winning Markham Farmers’ Market.

Event highlights from previous years

2023 Event Highlights

Our 2023 Science Rendezvous Festival was a resounding success! The excitement from the community as we came back fully in-person was unmistakable, as the number of attendees doubled to nearly 2000 people! We were very pleased to be back with the Markham community and were thrilled to bring some new and innovative activities to the festival.

Highlights from 2023 Science Rendezvous included:

  • Chemistry virtual reality booth with professors Derek Jackson and Kyle Belezerov
  • We danced in our giant human bubble experiment
  • We looked up to the Observatory Team as they brought their solar telescopes
  • Delve into the microscopic world of Ticks and Mosquitos with professor
  • Explored fascinating fractals by stepping into our life-sized kaleidoscope from Hongmei Zhu in the Department of Mathematics
  • The Lassonde School of Engineering brought circuits to life with their
  • Everyone laughed and sang with the
  • The held live demonstrations of their newest competition robot
  • brought Ontario's largest privately owned "you can touch" prehistoric fossil, exotic insect and rocks and mineral collection.

2022 Event Highlights

Building on the success of our 2021 event ranked as the second most attended event in Canada, we are thankful to everyone who made 2022 Science Rendezvous a great success. Even with our reduced capacity, over 800 people attended our in-person event in Markham and almost 1000 people attended our virtual event. We hope everyone had a wonderful day.

2021 Event Highlights

In 2021, we pivoted to an online event. York Science’s virtual site was the second most attended event in Canada. Participants raced (virtually) between event sites across the country, answered challenges, and learned about Canadian research and innovations. Our “Science Chase” event site featured escape-themed challenges, including saving the world with YU Starchaser 1000, diagnosing pet patients at the YU Veterinary Hospital, and using knowledge from the YU Forensics Academy to solve a mystery.
